Abstract

The present paper aims to establish a comparison, in the theoretical framework of the Critical Theory, between Jürgen Habermas’ conception of consensual public sphere and the proposal of struggling for recognition of Axel Honneth, with a comparison of the social struggle in the thinking of both. First, we will discuss the communicative action to understand how the public sphere lies in the philosophy of Habermas. Then, we will make explicit how Habermas updates the discussion of the public sphere in his most recent writings. Lastly, we will emphasize the proposal of Axel Honneth, as an alternative model to the theory of Habermas. Honneth develops his model of critical theory in the light of a design inspired in the young Hegel, namely: the struggle for recognition.
