    Abstract

Autonomy is of paramount importance for teaching and learning of foreign language contexts. The endless search for the information enables the learner a better competence in language skills. However, in a different context of second language learning, the foreign language learner does not have constant contact with the language when he or she is out of the classroom, unless he or she look for ways to practice what was learned. In this sense, studies on autonomy (HOLEC, 1981; LITTLE, 1991; BENSON, VOLERL, 1997; BENSON, 2001, DICKINSON, 1987; MAGNO E SILVA, 2003) show that students are aware of what skills and competences can be developed and trained according to their wills, or the interdependence of another subject, they become better learners. Consequently, they demonstrate better skills in language use. Thus, this study aims at analyzing the learning narratives of students in an intensive English language course at UFPA, discussing what students think, relating to their independent learning along their journeys as learners. The survey reveals that most of students have shown autonomous behaviors when they were looking for improvements to teach English in elementary schools.
