Estudo metalexicográfico do Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language (1989)

Abstract

The Brazilan metalexicography has contributed with relevant researches on evaluative and critical studies of lexicographic products since the 80’s. Among those studies, some have become referencial such as Biderman (1996; 2003), Finatto (2001a, 2001b), Welker (2004), Damim (2005) and Humblé (2006). Within the English lexicographic perspective, the objective of this paper is to describe the elements that constitute the different paradigms of the Webster’s Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language (1989), henceforth Webster´s (1989), to find out how the complex and intricate net of information about de lexicon of the English language was constructed. The Webster´s (1989) has been considered a comprehensive thesaurus of the English language and culture since the XIX century.
