The problematic in the characterization of the class of the pronouns in Portuguese language

The present article aims to reviews the opinions of Câmara Jr. (1969) and Lahud (1979) on the traits that mark a specific class of words called pronoun by several Traditional Grammars and linguists. We begin, therefore, with Câmara Jr. discussing the notions of symbolic field and demonstrative field and the role of pronouns in their proposal of classes of morpho-semantic nature. We also work with Lahud who, in beginning his study of the classical theories of pronouns, makes clear that his proposal is simply to look for certain points of conceptual references for the organization and analysis of the data that he has on deities. We therefore try to understand why these theories cannot be more efficient, since the class of words characterized by them as being pronominal does not fit totally within these points of view, that is, theories manage to only include part of these words. We note, however, that the point in common among these theories is the use of dexis as a pronominal mark.
