an emotional and haptic journey through the cinema of Miguel Gomes

Abstract

This article aims to address the issue of displacement and travel cinema in the work of Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes. Based on an overview of traveling and transient films, and their emergence through early cinema, this research also aims to bring the aspect of emotion into these film journeys, and to delve deeper into issues such as the nature of feeling and how it moves not only the frames and plots printed on the screen, but also the characters themselves in these works, and, consequently, the spectator who watches them. To this end, a haptic approach will also traverse some paths and itineraries in this desired investigation. The work seeks to reach two of Gomes' feature films, not in a self-absorbed proposal of film analysis, but rather in a combination between the productions proposed here and these authors and images brought throughout the text. In other words, through Our Beloved Month of August (2008) and Tabu (2012), we intend to think about the themes mentioned above, in a more culturalist approach to the object proposed here.
