This article seeks to investigate the feature film Tabu (2012), directed by the Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes. The aim is not to conduct a conventional film analysis, but rather to approach the work from a cultural perspective, drawing on concepts and theories that address issues related to memory, nostalgia, and melancholy. The discussion also considers how these elements construct an emotional landscape grounded in a romanticized and mythical ideal of colonial memories. Furthermore, we reflect on the flexible nature of nostalgia and melancholy, and on how this “journey” through multiple temporalities produces a kind of parallel, imagined universe—one populated by signs and symbols that evoke the affective dimension of saudade.
