Abstract

Reductionist interpretations of the Green Revolution (GR) fail to consider its historical and geopolitical implications. The article revisits the multiple dimensions of the GR with the aim of providing a systemic and sociological perspective that complexifies the understanding of the phenomenon. We relate the first stage of the GR to the Fordist production model, the emergence of the welfare state in central countries and the stifling of peasant revolts in peripheral countries. We relate the second stage of the GR to the Toyotist production model and the transnationalization of capital. We point out that trends towards biotechnology and the corporate appropriation of local knowledge converge in the context of agriculture 4.0. We conclude that the agricultural sector follows the dynamics and power relations inherent in the capitalist system, which requires broadening the horizons of scientific analysis in order to propose realistic alternatives to this model.
