From Débord to Godard
anti-cinema in Here and Elsewhere (1976)
Abstract
The concept of détournement was presented by Guy Débord and Gil Wolman in the text “A user’s guide to détournment” (Mode d'emploi du détournement), originally published in the Belgian surrealist newspaper Les Lèvres Nues #8, in the year of 1956. The central point of the text is that the literary and artistic heritage of humanity should be used for guerrilla propagandistic purposes. This article aims to discuss the similarities between the concept of détournement and the film “Here and Elsewhere” (Ici et Ailleurs, 1976), by Jean-Luc Godard and Anne-Marie Miéville, that is based on the footage of the unfinished film “Jusqu'à la victoire” by the Dziga Vertov Group, a filmmaking collective created by Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin. To analyze this relationship, we intend to explain the concepts used and compare the theory developed by Débord with the film Here and Elsewhere, pointing out the similarities between the two.
