Resumo

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of non pharmacological strategies for the pain relief of the parturient in labor. It was a clinical experiment of the therapeutic intervention type “before and after” accomplished in the Humanized Unit of Childbirth of the Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco/ UFRN, in Natal/RN with 100 parturient who went through the application of the non pharmacological strategies with breathing exercises, muscular relaxation and massage in the lumbar and sacral regions. We used the visual analogical scale to evaluate the parturient’s pain. Most of the parturients studied were between 20 to 30 years of age (60%); with incomplete primary school level (85%); family income up to 2 minimum wages (74%) and 78% with a companion. The oxytocin was administered in 81% of the cases and only 15% of those women didn’t receive any medication. We verified significant pain relief in the parturient after the application of the non pharmacological strategies. Those were really effective in the pain relief of the studied parturients.
