Abstract

The present work aimed to determine the pollution level in Lagoa da Fazenda, Sobral County, Ceará State, Brazil, through the Most Probable Number (MPN) of total (TC) and faecal coliforms (FC) and their identification, during the period from 2000 to 2001. It was collected 41 water samples in three stations A, B and C. The Station A presented the highest values of contamination with TC e FC per 100 mL varying from 9.3 x 103 a 11x 108 e 2.3 x 103 a 11 x 108, respectively. Escherichia coli was isolated in all studied stations. Results showed that the water of Lagoa da Fazenda is contaminated by feacal coliforms, which represent a health hazard to the local population. This water is not suitable to recreation activities.
