Abstract

The paper Love, Betrayal and Translation focuses on the translation of the short story “La fuerza del amor” (1637) by María de Zayas, one of the few women to publish books in the Spanish Golden Age. The short story is part of the collection Novelas amorosas y ejemplares, which gathered stories have a political function: defending women. The paper aims to bring comments and analytical reflections on the author and her work, on some aspects of the editions and translations that have been published over the centuries and, in particular, to present excerpts, and to comment, and analyze the choices made in the translation process of this short story into Brazilian Portuguese. By approaching the tension between the concepts of fidelity and betrayal, the reflections on the issues of translating applied to the text and to the literary context of the past are supported by Benjamin, Campos, Britto, Paes and Vizioli. As a researcher of Zayas’s works, the author of this paper is a beginner in the act of translation, and she dares to present to critical dialogue the coherence of her choices and their result. It is expected that this paper contributes to publicize to Brazilian readers and scholars the bold narrative by Zayas, a quill ready for defense of the female gender and of women´s writing.
