Convergences and divergences in the semantic aspectual classification of verbs

Verbs, beyond elementary temporal distinctions, can be classified by other properties linked to the temporality of the situation. More specifically, this paper discusses their categorization based on semantic aspectual criteria, which are those related to how languages represent temporal notions associated to the structure of events. The classifications developed by authors in the field, in turn, are not uniform. Therefore, this study compares four classifications consolidated in the literature: Vendler (1967), Smith (1991), Verkuyl (1993, 1999, 2005), and Rothstein (2004). The comparative analysis reveals fundamental convergences, namely: verbs can be classified by semantic aspectual properties; stative verbs differ considerably from non-stative verbs; and non-stative verbs are internally subdivided into at least two types. Among the divergences identified, the plurality of proposed verb types, the nature of the features that differentiate them and the autonomous status of semelfactives as a type of verb stand out.
