The woman in the prison: gender and processes of signification

Based on the Discourse Analysis proposed by Michel Pêcheux, the present study aims to discuss the situation of the imprisoned woman, and, also, the existing discourses in our society that concern what it is to be a woman and what it is to be an imprisioned woman. The study analyses the interviews made with two women who were arrested in Madre Pelletier Penitenciary, located in Porto Alegre (RS). We observed, through the examination of the linguistic marks, mainly the recurrence of certain linguistic expressions, the reproduction of preconstructed discourses about the role of the woman in the society, the situation of the woman in the prison, and the gender relations in the prison system. We also were able to explain the process of the constitution of the senses through the analysis of how the preconstructed affects the way women stand as subjects.
