The narrative organization of political meaning: causality and metaphorical-metonymic institution in opinion articles

In the moment of political polarization, above all, different narratives are produced with the intention of explaining the same phenomenon. This is due to the very character of politics as a dispute for power, since the establishment of the truth of facts is also a matter of dispute over the hegemony of meaning. Narrative has, in this perspective, an almost magical role in the construction of meanings through discourse. Motta (2013) considers, in the wake of Bruner (1998), the narrative as the canon organizer of reality and, therefore, it is possible to speak of a cognitive function proper to the narrativity. This article establishes a dialogue between discourse analysis, argumentation and cognition, through the analysis of excerpts sections of two journalistic articles of opinion in which one can perceive, through narrativity, the occurrence of two discursive processes, that of causality and the metaphorical-metonymic one, both integrated to condense, at the end of the text, specific and determined meanings.
