Politeness and impoliteness in political cartoons

Politeness can be considered a strategy for ensuring that the interactions between social actors run smoothly and evenly. On the other hand, impolite behaviors are evidenced in relation to polite acts, however, in many interactions, noticing whether a term is polite or impolite depends not only on linguistic factors, but on the situational elements and on the interactants engaged therein. In this sense, this article aimed to analyze the politeness and impoliteness in two political cartoons. As an analysis category, some categories of off-record strategies by Brown and Levinson were listed to compose the methodological framework. To support the research, we based on the following authors: Brown and Levinson (1987), Leech (1983), Culpeper (1996), among others. The analyzes indicated that politeness and impoliteness are visible in the cartoons, even though the categories of analysis are classified by the authors of the theory of politeness as off-record politeness strategies. Therefore, the results revealed the importance of deepening the reflections on politeness and impoliteness in order to realize that what is polite or impolite can emerge from the communicative situation, as happened in the analyzed political cartoons.
