January 8, 2023 as represented by Senators on Twitter/X: A Systemic Functional Study

This article aims to analyze the experiential representational meanings constructed by Brazilian senators regarding the events of January 8, 2023. The theoretical framework adopted is Systemic Functional Grammar (Halliday; Matthiessen, 2014), with a focus on the lexico-grammatical stratum of language, particularly on the Transitivity system. Based on this system, the study investigates the experiential meanings instantiated in ten tweets published on the afternoon of January 8, 2023, after the beginning of the invasions. In accordance with the classification established by the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo(2022), senators elected in 2022 were organized into three groups: Right, Center, and Left. For comparative purposes, this research analyzes the first five posts from the Right and Left groups. The results indicate that, although they hold the same legislative role, the senators adopted different representational focuses in response to the anti-democratic acts.
