Abstract

The fishery for octopus,  Octopus  spp., has shown an outstanding development since the early 2000’s as an  alternative of compensation for spiny lobster overfishing in Ceará State, on account of its economic potential derived from  the gastronomic appeal and high market price. This research work was conducted onboard four small-scale sailboats in  Redonda, Icapuí countty, with pot longline as fishing gear. Abundance and fishing effort data were analyzed. The study  was conducted with four sailing vessels in Redonda, Icapuí/CE with pot longline. Abundance and fishing effort data were  taken as the basis for economic-monetary risk analysis and likely establishment of a commercial fishing outfit in Ceará.  A direct relationship was found to exist between yield and depth of the fishing ground. The boats that fished at deeper  grounds proved to be the ones that showed the closes agreement with required profile to qualify for banking investment  loans aiming at the establishment of a commercial fishery for octopus in the Redond fishing community
