Abstract

The study of the coastal dynamic of a part of the shore of Fortaleza city, Northeastern Brazil, is presented in this paper using the shore profile analysis that was done during a year between the months of July/1995 and May/1996. The field work was based on topographic surveys, sampling the shoreface sediments and observations of the wind’s velocity and direction. The shore profiles analysis was that according to Wright & Short’s (1984) classification. It revealed the presence of reflective, intermediate to reflective and dissipative stages. The application of Galvin Jr.’s (1968) breaking coefficient showed a spilling breaking beach type for the studied area. The beach zone slope is characterised by a low topographic gradient towards to foreshore, changing only during the months of September, 1995 (Profile 2) and March, 1996 (Profile 1) when the sandy shore terraces were observed. The wave breaking height presented a small variation with a range of 0.152 to 0.192m. These aspects did not influence the morphology of the shore profiles. The sandy recovery of the studied area is well characterised by the presence of quartzous sand sediments with medium to fine sand.
