Volitividade, Modalidade e Subjetividade: uma abordagem dialógica entre a Gramática Discursivo-Funcional e a Linguística Textual

Abstract

This article proposes a description and analysis of the expression of subjectivity in the homilies of Pope Leo XIV, with an emphasis on the manifestation of volitivity and modality, based on the Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) of Hengeveld and Mackenzie (2008) and the assumptions of Text Linguistics (TL), especially the contributions of Koch (2015[1984]) regarding argumentation and the construction of subjectivity in discourse through modality. For this purpose, a corpus consisting of ten homilies by Pope Leo XIV available in Spanish and published on the official website of the Vatican was used. From these texts, only the occurrences of volitivity (Declarative, Exhortative, Imperative illocutions, etc.) and modality (deontic, volitive and axiological) were selected. Following the data analysis, it is concluded that the main forms of linguistic expression were lexical words (51.6%) which function as linguistic resources with argumentative and evaluative. Furthermore, the third person singular (38.5%) and the first-person plural (20.9%) were predominant in encoding subjectivity. The latter is used to engage listeners and mitigate the asymmetry between the speaker (religious leader) and the interlocutors (Catholic faithful), while the former refers to the desires and opinions of the divinity. Finally, Declarative Illocutions proved to be predominant (69.2%) as they seek to legitimize doctrinal positions and guide behaviour.

Mestre em Linguística pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC). Doutor em Linguística pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC). Integrante do Grupo de Estudos em Funcionalismo da Universidade Federal do Ceará (GEF/UFC). Atualmente, é Professor Adjunto C Nível I de Língua Espanhola da Faculdade de Engenharia, Letras e Ciências Sociais do Seridó da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (FELCS/UFRN). As últimas pesquisas têm-se focado em estudos sobre a categoria Modalidade na Gramática Discursivo-Funcional (GDF), Modalização Discursiva e Ensino de Língua Espanhola desde um viés Funcionalista.
