Abstract

This work aimed, applying numerical models, to perform quantitative and qualitative analyses of the freshwater river discharge into estuaries in Ceará State. The freshwater discharges into estuaries are highly influenced by specific semi-arid / tropical hydroclimatological conditions which provide periods of rainfall absence. During drought periods the rivers are ephemeral and freshwater discharge into estuaries is reduced. At the same time, Ceará State Rivers have suffered enormous modification of discharge regime due to damming, and thus, for most estuaries, regulated dam discharges control the freshwater inflow.
